SaltSpring Kitchen Co.: Gourmet Jams, Preserves, and Hot Sauces

Flavour-filled condiments for people who love to eat, share, and entertain. Small batches, all-natural, simple ingredients. Proud to be a woman-owned, living-wage employer on Salt Spring Island.

What they do

Gourmet Jams, Preserves, and Hot Sauces

SaltSpring Kitchen Co. offers a complete lineup of flavour-filled condiments for people who love to eat, share, and entertain, all made in their small jam factory on the island.

They opened a Tasting Room in 2023, and it has become a hub for locals and visitors, offering everything they make, as well as cheese, crackers, non-alcoholic drinks, and local gifts. In the summer, the space transforms with live music events from Pitchfork Social, bringing food and culture together in a way only Salt Spring can.

The FOLKS & why they do it

Meet Founder Melanie Mulherin

"Since 2012 we've been spreading the love for jams, preserves, and hot sauces that elevate the everyday. To be a small part of your breaking bread, your everyday meals, and celebrations, is the greatest joy."

Melanie Mulherin grew up in Kelowna, where orchards, fruit stands, and dinner parties shaped her love for food. Years later, in her mother-in-law’s kitchen, she learned to preserve—an act of care and creativity that sparked something bigger.

After a move to Salt Spring Island, with young kids and a kitchen full of ideas, Melanie began experimenting. The first jars of her now-signature-style preserves were sold at the Salt Spring Saturday Market under the name Simply Salty Kitchen. What started in a space above her garage grew slowly—by intention—into a beloved jam company.

Melanie’s goal isn’t just great flavour—it’s meaningful work, too. The company is a living wage employer with a growing team, many of whom have been with her for years. “I want our team to feel supported and fulfilled,” she says. “To take the lead on projects and know they can take a break when they need one.”

Despite national distribution, a growing online presence, and recent partnerships like the 2025 Jilly Box, SaltSpring Kitchen stays rooted in the community. “We don’t get too caught up in what we’re ‘supposed’ to do. Sometimes, I sponsor a skateboarding event. Sometimes I just say, ‘Let’s do it,’ and figure it out later.”
